Head to Mgahinga National Park upon arrival or pick up from the agreed point in the morning after breakfast.
You will then embark on the journey to the smallest national park in Uganda, Mgahinga National Park, famous for inhabiting both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
This park is part of the Virunga Massif and is listed under the UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to its amazing biodiversity.
Not only is it home to primates, but the park also boasts different bird species like the Rwenzori batis and Rwenzori turacos, as well as plant species and large mammals like forest elephants and buffalos, among others.
Spot en route attractions like the famous Uganda Equator along the Masaka – Mbarara highway and visit the Ankole-Kigezi Museum at Igongo Cultural Centre.
Enjoy the terraced hills of Kigezi Highlands as you make your way to your booked lodge near Mgahinga National Park.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Trail
Head to the park offices at Ntebeko after breakfast for briefing where you will receive more information about the forest and its inhabitants, including the mountain gorillas, from the head ranger.
The dos and don’ts will be well explained, for instance, not feeding wild animals, not littering the park premises, no smoking, and maintaining a 7-meter distance from the gorillas, among others.
Afterward, head into the forest under the guidance of a well-armed park ranger and begin the great adventure of gorilla trekking.
This experience can take about 3 to 5 hours, depending on the location where the gorillas will be found, and you will spend an hour in the presence of a gorilla family observing these beautiful primates.
They might be feeding, playing, breastfeeding, or moving from one place to another, among other activities.
After the trek, return to your lodge for a leisurely lunch, followed by a community tour to the Batwa villages.
The trail is led by a Twa native guide with a short briefing before heading into the forest to learn about the lifestyle of this unique culture, who used to live and depend on the forest of Mgahinga.
They spent most of their time hunting, gathering fruits and roots, and using local herbs as medicine, among other activities.
You will also explore some caves that were once home to their kings. The adventure will conclude after returning to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.
Day 3: Transfer Back to Kampala
