Essential Vaccinations for Uganda Travelers – Yellow Fever, Hepatitis, Typhoid & Malaria Precautions

The Great Rift Valley forms the western border of the plateau, which covers a large part of the country. Lake Victoria is the biggest of several large lakes.

Uganda has a tropical climate, but its height makes the humidity and heat lower. The two rainy seasons are in spring and fall.

  • Malaria: Malaria is common in the country, and taking antimalarial medicine is recommended. The type of malaria medicine needed depends on the travel route, length of stay, and advice from a doctor.
  • Yellow Fever: All travelers who are one year old or older must have a yellow fever vaccination certificate. For travelers older than nine months, vaccination is recommended for protection, and a certificate may be needed for further travel. A vaccination certificate is required for visitors arriving in Uganda within six days of leaving a country where yellow fever is present.
  • Hepatitis A: All travelers are at high risk of getting hepatitis A. Vaccination is recommended.
  • Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is common among the local population. Getting vaccinated is advised. Talk to a doctor for information about your personal risk.
  • Typhoid: Most travelers have a moderate risk of typhoid. Those traveling outside regular tourist routes to smaller cities, villages, and rural areas should get vaccinated. Some medical conditions can increase the risk of infection. It is best to consult a doctor to see if vaccination is needed.
  • Insect-borne Diseases: Diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and zika may be present. The risk varies by country and season. The route, length of stay, and type of travel determine whether preventive measures are needed, so consulting a doctor is important. These diseases are most common in cities and semi-urban areas but can also be found in rural regions. Year-round protection against insect bites is strongly recommended.

According to Travelvax, the best protection is to be aware of insect habits, wear appropriate clothing, and use insect repellent correctly. Speak with a doctor for information about your personal risk.
