Uganda has 165 lakes, including some well-known ones like Nkuruba, Lyantonde, Nyinambuga, Nyabikere, Bunyonyi, Mutanda, Mutolere, Bulera, Bunyampaka, Kitagata, Murumali, Bagusa, Nshenyi, Chibwera, Nyamanyuka, Muhoma, Bujuku, and Nyamusingire.
Because of its many lakes and rivers, which cover nearly a third of the country, Uganda is often called the land of lakes.
A List of Five Beautiful Ugandan Lakes
- Lake Victoria: Covering a total area of 68,800 square kilometers and sitting at an elevation of 1,100 meters above sea level, Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world. Kenya and Uganda share this lake. Boat cruises and fishing are the main activities on the lake.
- Lakes George and Edward: Lake Edward covers 2,325 square kilometers and has a depth of 913 meters, making it one of the deepest lakes. Lake George is much smaller, covering 250 square kilometers. It is shallow and surrounded by marshland.
- Lake Albert: Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo share this lake, which is about 612 meters deep. The lake is surrounded by fishing communities.
- Lake Kyoga: This large, shallow lake covers about 1,720 square kilometers, with maximum depths of 4 to 5.7 meters. It is surrounded by large marshes that are fed by a network of rivers.
- Lake Bunyonyi: Located in southwestern Uganda, 7 km west of Kabale Town, this lake is about 25 km long and 7 km wide. The lake offers many activities, including nature walks, birdwatching, canoe trips, and community visits.
