Hunting Safaris in Uganda – Opportunities, Regulations & Conservation Efforts

Uganda Hunting Safari – The Price of Hunting in Uganda: Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa. It shares borders with Kenya, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Although Uganda is mainly equatorial, it lies entirely within the Nile basin. The country’s climate varies due to differences in altitude. However, daytime temperatures typically reach 35°C (90°F), while nighttime temperatures drop to 5°C (40°F).

While hunting for many species is possible year-round, the best time to hunt buffalo and hartebeest is from December to April, when the grass is too high and makes hunting difficult.

Uganda’s protected areas have the highest density of Sitatunga in Africa, and these safaris take place in the Kafu River Basin and the papyrus belts along the banks of the Nile River.

The hunting season in Uganda runs from January to November, with slightly more rain falling between April to June and in November.

Firearms & Ammunition

Firearms & Ammunition

Each hunter is allowed to bring two rifles into Uganda. There is no official limit on the amount of ammunition that can be brought, but airline regulations typically restrict this to 11 pounds.

For a small rifle, the recommended amount is 60 rounds, while for a heavier rifle, 20 soft rounds and 20 solid rounds are suggested.

Handguns and semi-automatic firearms are not allowed. The use of silencers for hunting is also prohibited. The recommended calibers for hunting are .270–.300 for most animals and .375–.416 for buffalo.

If a hunter does not want to bring their own rifle, camp firearms and ammunition are available for an additional cost. The price and firearm model should be confirmed when booking the hunt.

Permits & Licenses

Permits & Licenses

All sport hunters traveling to Uganda must obtain a hunting license and an import permit for rifles before their arrival.

Hunters are charged a daily conservation fee of $100. Non-hunters are charged a daily conservation fee of $40.

The full safari package includes the cost of two weapons and the importation of ammunition under royalties.

Hunting areas in Uganda fall into three main categories: National Game Reserves, Communal Hunting Areas and Private Land.

In Uganda, communal hunting areas are managed by private companies. However, it is important to note that sport hunting is not highly developed in the country. Some hunting areas have poor road networks, which may make access difficult.

The best places for sport hunting in Uganda include: Ssese Islands (for Sitatunga), East Madi Wildlife Reserve, Ajai Wildlife Reserve, Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve and Karamoja.
