Essential Facts About Uganda – Culture, Geography & People

In the travel industry, Uganda is well known as the “Pearl of Africa,” a name that sums up its many good qualities in just three words. Rich in natural resources, the country is a mix of different indigenous and international cultures.

More than 50 tribes live in a land of 93,064 square miles (241,037 square kilometers), which is about the size of Britain. As new cultures form and others fade, Uganda remains a place of cultural variety.

Essential Facts About Uganda - Culture, Geography & People

Despite years of civil conflicts and political struggles, the people of Uganda are welcoming, kind, and strong, allowing them to embrace people from all backgrounds.

Despite its challenges, Uganda continues to welcome refugees with an open-door policy based on traditional African hospitality. According to UNHCR and Global Citizen, Uganda is the most welcoming country for refugees. Though this has nothing to do with refugees, Uganda also has the youngest population in Africa.

Uganda’s young population is highly active in business, even more than the US and UK, two of the world’s biggest economies. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) reports that 28% of adults either own or co-own new businesses.

You may wonder why there are not many large companies run by Ugandans. The reason is that Ugandan entrepreneurs often choose to keep their businesses small and informal to create jobs for themselves rather than expanding into large companies.

Uganda is also committed to nature conservation, keeping more than 20% of its land for wildlife. Winston Churchill’s 1907 description of Uganda as the “Pearl of Africa” remains true today.

Within its rift valley basin, Uganda’s natural beauty supports a great variety of plants and animals. The country is home to Africa’s largest freshwater lake, the source of the longest river, the strongest waterfall, the most primates, and the highest number of mountain gorillas in the world.

There are many great things about Uganda that make it a top travel destination, but let’s focus on these ten for tourists.
